According to local media, three children’s bodies have been pulled out of the canal near the city of Lucknow in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh while four still remain missing.
The seven children have been identified as Aman, 9, Sajan, 8, Saurabh, 8, Sachin, 6, Sunny, 5, Mansi, 4, and Manisha, 4.
Meanwhile, all 22 adults have been rescued after the vehicle, identified as a pickup truck in some reports, plunged into the Indira Ghandi Canal in the area of Nagram following a wedding reception.
The emergency services were immediately notified and a team of divers is currently searching the canal.
Police spokesperson S.K. Bhagat said that strong currents were complicating the operation, adding that efforts were being made to control the flow so divers can continue with the search.
Local authorities in areas downstream have been told to set up nets in the water to recover the bodies of any victims being swept along by the currents.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has been made aware of the incident and has asked for full assistance in the rescue operation, which is currently ongoing.
It is currently unclear why the adults all reportedly escaped with their lives and the children apparently did not.
