The attack, which happened in Barmalipur village in India’s Punjab state, left the young boy in hospital where he is being privately treated in the nearby city of Ludhiana.
CCTV footage shows the boy, identified only by his first name Mehtab, walking towards the dog which is off-camera, and then turning to run as the dog attacks.
The dog bites the boy in the body and then bites him on the leg, but stops when the boy’s grandfather Manjit Singh who was sitting nearby realised what was going on and rushed to intervene.
The grandfather said: “The stray dog attacked Mehtab when he stepped out of his house. We rushed out on hearing his cries and drove the dog away. It had bitten my grandson’s cheek. We took him to a private hospital in Doraha that referred him to a Ludhiana hospital. He has been admitted for three days, and due to the swelling, he is unable to open his eyes.”
Mehtab’s father, Sandeep Singh, who is a local factory worker, said: “His cheek might need to be operated upon. It will be difficult for me to meet the expenses with my salary.”
There have been a number of attacks by dogs in the village and local mayor Kuldeep Singh said, “There are 15 to 20 stray dogs in the village, but no steps have been taken to tackle them and they are a menace.”
Some locals also suggested they were worried that some of the dogs might have rabies. In October last year, a five-year-old child died of rabies in Sarabha Nagar in Ludhiana in the northern India’s Punjab state.
