This is the moment a cheeky elephant helps itself to a lorry’s cargo of sugarcane after the vehicle ran out of petrol and came to a halt.
The hilarious scene was recorded by an onlooker near the village of Hasanur in the Erode District of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu State.
Local media report the lorry driver, who has not been named, came to a halt on the road and he quickly realised he had run out of petrol.
The elephant then appeared out of the foliage on the side of the road and in the video the huge animal can be seen eyeing up the lorry’s cargo of sugar cane.
The animal then walks up to the lorry and sorts through the cane before picking the piece it wants with its trunk, lifting it from the back of the lorry and eating it.
The elephant can be seen repeating the trick, making its way to the lorry’s cab where the driver was reportedly stuck inside.
Local media report the elephant ate for between 15 and 30 minutes, causing a traffic jam as cars could not pass the broken down lorry.
Forest officials were called to the scene but the elephant had reportedly walked away before they could arrive.
