When the footage appeared online and sparked outrage, the police claimed that the rotting body, which was later loaded into an ox cart, was giving off a strong stench and they decided to take it by cart instead of waiting any longer for a hearse to arrive.
One of the officers said: “It was also difficult to even stand near the dead body.”
The incident took place in the village of Bankhandi in the district of Hoshiarpur located in the northern Indian state of Punjab when residents discovered the woman’s body in a nearby forest.
The police were called to the scene and collected evidence before taking the body to a hospital in Hoshiarpur to undergo an autopsy.
However, instead of calling for a hearse, officers decided to load the corpse onto an ox cart, according to local media.
However, police spokesman Rajesh Arora said that the officers’ conduct will be investigated.
He also confirmed that photos of the dead woman have been circulated to police stations in the region to try to identify her.
The investigation is ongoing.
