A drunk has been collared for having sex with several cows at an animal shelter after was allegedly caught on camera by volunteers.
The man, named in reports as Rajkumar, is said to have been caught in the act by the shelter’s volunteers in the city of Ayodhya in Faizabad district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Reports state the volunteers had seen CCTV footage which showed the man having sex with several cows.
They are the said to have waited for him to return and when he did so he was trying to have sex with the cows again.
The volunteers reportedly grabbed him and beat him before calling the police.
He was arrested and charged with ‘cruelty against animals’, according to official sources.
The shelter’s priest, named Ramdas, said the security camera footage showed Rajkumar carrying out “unspeakable acts” on the cows, adding that the staff are distraught.
The suspect told reporters he “was drunk” at the time, saying he does not remember what he had done apart from being beaten.
The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear if a trial date has been set.
Cows are seen as sacred by many Indians and the country’s constitution of India mandates the protection the animals, with their slaughter illegal in 14 states.
