The startling scenes were recorded in the city of Guwahati in the state of Assam in north-eastern India after the elephant escaped from the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.
Local media report the animal left the sanctuary and made its way through the city looking for food.
In the video, a huge crowd can be seen walking behind the elephant down a busy road.
The wide road appears to have been cleared on the side the elephant is casually strolling down while on the other side traffic is at a standstill as drivers record the moment on their phones.
The elephant calmly makes its way down the city street and seems unperturbed by the honking horns and car engines sounding around it.
Reports state the police and forest officials tried to stop the elephant using barricades but eventually a tranquiliser dart was needed to stop the huge animal.
The authorities told reporters the animal was not injured in the incident and it will be returned to the sanctuary after walking over 25 kilometres (15 miles) into the city.
Reports say traffic was stalled for several hours because of the elephant but no damage was reported.
