The incident was filmed by a stunned onlooker at Bandra Railway station in the coastal city of Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra and uploaded to social media.

In the footage, a rat is seen through the window of a refrigerator among the water bottles.

As the trapped rodent appears unable to move, the person filming zooms out and shows the proximity of the kiosk to the platform and passing commuters.

Meanwhile, rail officials have reportedly closed the kiosk and fined the owner for violating health and safety practices.

Railway spokesman Ravinder Bhakar confirmed that the snack bar has been closed for “deep cleaning” and “pest and rodent control” while the owner, identified as Parmar Chana Sing, has reportedly been fined 10,000 INR (110 GBP).

According to local media, Western Railway officials have begun raiding kiosks and food counters located in stations along the line to make sure that health standards are being met.

They warned that anyone who violates health and safety practices will be shut down, possibly permanently, and heavily fined.
