The startling incident occurred in the Athwalines area of Surat district in the state of Gujarat in India and was recorded by onlookers.
Local media report the building was evacuated by the Fire Brigade when it began tilting to one side.
The residents were rushed out of the building but 65-year-old Kaushal Vatani then realised he had left his eight-year-old Labrador Retriever named Snipe inside.
He asked firemen and workers from a local NGO to save the dog, but it was too late to go back into the building to rescue the pooch and the building collapsed that night.
Local media report Vatani and his family gave Snipe up for dead, believing there was no way he could have survived the collapse.
But three hours after the collapse, Snipe battled his way to the top of the rubble and was spotted by residents.
In the video, a fireman can be seen lifting the pooch from the debris and carrying him down to safety.
Onlookers applaud as the dog is carried back towards its owner in an incident described as a “miracle” in local media.
There have been no reports of injuries in the collapse.
