The victim, identified as 53-year-old Shakil Abdul Gaffar Shaikh, was reportedly travelling with work colleagues in a second-class compartment at Charni Road railway station in Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.
According to a family member, a thief got on the train at the station and stole Shaik’s phone before running off.
As the train was leaving the platform, Shaik gave chase, but the departing train’s momentum caused him to lose balance and he fell off the platform onto the tracks.
An unnamed railway official said: “We immediately rushed Shaikh to hospital where he was declared dead.
“We have zeroed in on the suspect after examining CCTV footage of the platform and are looking for him.”

The victim is survived by his 47-year-old wife Nilofer Shaikh and two sons, 27-year-old Armaan and Sohail, 22.
His workmates said that he was sitting at the front of the compartment near the door when the thief boarded the train to snatch his phone, according to reports.
Local activist Subhash Gupta said: “It is shocking that robbers are now emboldened enough to target passengers in trains and on platforms.
“Police presence is a must at stations during all operational hours.”
The investigation continues.
