According to local media, the suspect, identified as Pinu and said to be the sibling of Vice President of the Bhartiya Janata Party and former state minister Renu Devi, was outraged that the worker failed to stand up for him.
In the CCTV footage filmed at the store in the city of Bettiah in the north-eastern Indian state of Bihar, the suspect in a brown shirt is seen confronting the seated employee.
The man appears to argue back, but apparently accompanied by his entourage, Pinu begins to beat the pharmacy worker and at the end he is dragged out by the group.
Reports said that the man, identified as Manoj Kumar Patel, initially refused to stand when asked which is why he was beaten and allegedly abducted.
He was taken to the office of the Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) where he was tortured, according to local media.
Patel later said: “At least four people beat me up there. They also trained a pistol at me and asked me to leave the place at once.
“Pinu became furious when I didn’t stand up as a mark of respect to him. He dragged me out and thrashed me in full public view. Later, Pinu and his associates took me to an isolated place where I was beaten up black and blue.”
Police spokesperson Jayant Kant said that the group’s vehicle was later confiscated as part of the investigation.
It is unclear where the man was driven to and what happened to him there.
Kant told local media that the victim’s family has been assigned several officers for security.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s sister, politician Renu Devi, said that she does not talk to her sibling.
She added: “I’ve no relation with Pinu, with that house, since many years. We’re not on talking terms. Still, I’m being dragged [into the allegation].”
According to reports, the suspect has not yet been arrested as the investigation is ongoing.
