The incident was filmed by an audience member in the city of Sambhal in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and shared on social media.

Reports said that the stage collapsed during a rally organised by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the city’s Holi celebrations.

The stage was holding a large group of BJP members at the time who were taking turns to speak to the crowd.

Several politicians have been reported as injured during the incident. Party leader Avdesh Yadav said he suffered a broken leg.

In the footage, dozens of party members are seen standing on the raised stage inside a marquee as a full crowd looks on and films with their phones.

The BJP politicians suddenly drop to the ground in unison and disappear from view.

The crowd appears stunned at first, but some of the politicians start getting to their feet at the end of the footage.

Local BJP leader Avdesh Yadav told local media: “As the crowd swelled, the stage suddenly collapsed.

“Many party workers were injured and are recovering now. I also sustained a fracture (leg).”

It is unclear whether the incident is being investigated by the local authorities.
