The incident was filmed by a CCTV camera at Jogeshwari railway station in the city of Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

In the shocking footage, a woman in yellow clothing is seen approaching the platform’s edge with what appears to be a baby in her arms.

Without hesitation, she leaps in front of an oncoming train and appears to drop the baby mid-flight – possibly saving the tot’s life.

In the next scene, a man on the tracks lifts a baby onto the platform as bystanders rush over to help.

According to local media, the nine-month old baby girl miraculously survived the incident while the 24-year old woman, identified as Gayatri Jaiswal, died.

Reports said that an argument with the baby’s father led to Jaiswal committing suicide with baby Niyati in her arms.

The deceased, who was pronounced dead in hospital, was a housewife while Jaiswal works as a taxi driver, according to local media.

Police spokesman Sanjay Patil said. “She was holding the infant. The baby landed between the tracks and did not come in contact with the train.”

It is unclear whether the local authorities are continuing their investigations.
