The startling footage was recorded by a CCTV camera in the Laldiggi locality in the city of Gorakhpur in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
In the video, a woman, named in reports as Poonam Gupta runs out of a building with a group of men surrounding her and she suddenly bursts into flames.
Gupta can be seen running across the street engulfed in flames as the men who were surrounding her go back inside.
The burning woman falls to the ground and begins rolling on the tarmac to try to put out the fire out as onlookers gather round.
Local media report Guptar, who was in her twenties, was taken to hospital in the Lucknow area of the city but later died.
Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Gupta told reporters that Guptar had given officers a statement before her death in which she said she had set herself on fire because she was being harassed.
The woman was reportedly being harassed by her in-laws over the non-payment of her 500,000-INR (5,487-GBP) dowry.
Complaints were made against nine people including her husband Alok Gupta and his family and five people have now been arrested.
The victim’s mother Rajkumari Devi contradicted the police and claimed her daughter had been burnt by her in-laws because of the non-payment of the dowry.
A dowry is a transfer of parental property, gifts or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage. The system of paying dowries is widespread in India.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
